Dr. Lupo has been working with many teams this year to help us understand the best evidence-based supports in adolescent literacy instruction - including interventions. CVEDC is continuing our partnership with Dr. Lupo for FY24, by bringing her to Vermont for:
3-Full Day in-person institutes: Ideal for MTSS and leadership teams, EST teams, Interventionists and literacy support personnel
Day 1 Institute only is ideal for classroom, disciplinary/content instructors for Tier 1 strategies
The Interventionist Cohort -Adding this to the full year offering will support adolescent literacy specialists supporting struggling students.

9/28/23 Kick-off Day 1: Supporting Students’ Disciplinary Literacy Skills:
This session will develop participants' understanding of comprehension and vocabulary development, teach them how to administer formative comprehension assessments and develop quad text sets. It will include a brief session on analyzing texts and introduce participants to scaffolding comprehension. Note: This is a focus on tier 1, but also all things that need to occur in an intervention setting. Appropriate for adding classroom/disciplinary teachers to this day.
9/29/23 Kick-off Day 2: Supporting Students in Supplemental Intervention:
This session will begin with defining intervention then teach participants how to assess foundational skills and analyze data to form intervention pathways. It will include how to create exit and entrance criteria (with equity checks) and an introduction to teaching foundational skills, including how to break apart words and introduce teaching morphology. Note: This is a focus only on intervention (not tier 1)
5/15/24 Closing Session: Putting it All Together: A Comprehensive Look at Multifaceted Interventions
This session will help interventionists and teams review their intervention structures and plans to ensure that all components of literacy were adequately addressed and will include some action planning for rethinking next year’s intervention.

Note: Each monthly session below includes an hour-long asynchronous module and a 45-minute live virtual follow-up with Dr. Lupo.
Module 1: Supporting Word Recognition with Morphology Instruction: This session will focus on teaching word recognition alongside morphology instruction, including how to embed age-appropriate phonics knowledge into this instruction. Quick review of entrance & exit criteria focused on foundational skills.

Module 2: Supporting Vocabulary Development: Deep dive into vocabulary and language supports to help readers access challenging texts that contain many unfamiliar words or language. Quick review of formative assessment of comprehension.

Module 3: Progress Monitoring for Intervention: This session will look at assessment data to determine needs and measure progress (foundational skills and comprehension), review exit/entrance criteria.

Module 4: Supporting Fluency Development: This session will provide in depth ideas and practice around supporting adolescents fluency. Quick review of entrance and exit criteria and progress monitoring for fluency.

Module 5: Supporting Comprehension: This session will review and extend teachers’ knowledge of comprehension supports and provide specific ideas for scaffolds, including writing to learn techniques, that address complex text structure, complex ideas, and high background knowledge demands. Quick review of progress monitoring for comprehension using formative measures.

Module 6: Virtual Discussion: This session will focus on the importance of text-based discussion and support teachers in teaching students how to have strong disciplinary discussions, as well as provide them a tool-box of discussion-based strategies. Quick review of progress monitoring for comprehension using formative measures.

Dr. Sarah Lupo is an Assistant Professor at James Madison Univ. who has extensive teaching experience as an ESL teacher, English teacher, reading specialist, and literacy coach in grades K-12 in Washington D.C., Istanbul, Turkey, Phoenix, AZ, and Charlottesville, VA. She has worked with many districts to support literacy instruction across Virginia and nationwide.
